Georgia Nugent, Ph.D., is a nationally respected leader in higher education and a devoted advocate for the liberal arts. Now retired, Dr. Nugent most recently served as President of Illinois Wesleyan University, where she made history as the institution’s first female president. Her tenure was marked by a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, inclusive leadership, and institutional renewal.
Dr. Nugent earned her bachelor’s degree in classics from Princeton University and completed her doctorate in classics at Cornell University. A renowned scholar in classical studies, she has published widely on Greek tragedy and ancient epic poetry. Her academic background deeply shaped her leadership philosophy and her advocacy for a broad-based liberal arts education.
Before leading Illinois Wesleyan, Dr. Nugent served as President of Kenyon College from 2003 to 2013. During her decade of service, she led transformative initiatives, including a major capital campaign, enhancements to student life and facilities, and strengthened academic programs. Following her presidency at Kenyon, she worked with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC), where she spearheaded national efforts to support private higher education and promote leadership development.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Nugent has been a compelling voice on the national stage, frequently invited to speak and write on topics ranging from institutional leadership to the value of the liberal arts in contemporary society.
